Sweating
First off, the Summer months are hot and you inevitably experience sweat or humidity while wearing your hearing devices. Don’t worry though, your devices are designed to be able to withstand some moisture. Plan ahead to prevent any excessive sweat from getting to your hearing device by wearing a sweatband, bandana, or headband to soak up all the perspiration! Storing your Hearing Devices
There are currently no waterproof hearing aids that are available for children. Instead, remove the hearing aids and protect them by using a waterproof case. A waterproof case is an easy and affordable solution that keeps your hearing aid dry and secure while swimming. Make sure to keep it out of direct heat, as extreme temperatures can cause the hearing aid to warp or crack.
Swimming with Cochlear Implants
And what about cochlear implants? You can use waterproof covers specially designed to protect cochlear implants from water damage. It is going to depend on what type of cochlear implant your child wears, so I would recommend going through the manufacturer to select the proper cover for the implant. You can also reach out to your audiologist and see what they recommend and where you can order a waterproof accessory kit for your cochlear implant.
Your hearing devices are expensive and it is important to take care of them. If all else fails, simply remove the hearing devices before going swimming or where there is a lot of water or moisture. It is better to have them safe and protected instead of getting broken or damaged in the water. You can use a hearing aid dehumidifier to remove any excess moisture that may have gotten in your hearing device. Be sure to communicate with your child any safety precautions before they enter the pool, while they still have their devices on.
So don’t let hearing devices hold you back from enjoying swimming and having fun in the sun with your family. With these 3 ways to protect your hearing devices during the Summer, you can enjoy being outside and playing while protecting your devices simultaneously!
