Whether hiking in a nearby national park, lounging on the beach, or simply enjoying a picnic in a local park, spending time in nature can be incredibly therapeutic and rejuvenating. My goal during my summer break is to go on as many hikes as possible. Utah got a ton of snow this winter, so as it is melting, the waterfalls are much more intense and I am so excited to hike to them and enjoy their magnificence!
Read for Pleasure:
- Dive into that stack of books that have been piling up on your bedside table. Reading for pleasure allows you to escape into different worlds and broaden your horizons. Choose genres that interest you and get lost in the pages of a captivating novel, an inspiring memoir, or a thought-provoking non-fiction book. I always go through phases of reading and I find that I read so much more during the summer! I am a sucker for romance novels and have a whole list of books on my Summer Book Reads list that I am looking forward to reading.
Unleash Your Creativity:
- Engage in creative activities that allow you to express yourself. Try painting, drawing, writing, or any other artistic endeavor that speaks to you. Let your imagination run wild and embrace the freedom of creating something solely for your enjoyment. I bought a bracelet kit that I intended to use for my sister’s bachelorette party and it never got opened. It was a camp theme and I had the idea to use it to make “camp friendship bracelets”, but no one made one (oh well 🤷🏻♀️). I’ll be ready for next school year with cute new bracelets!
Practice Mindfulness and Meditation:
- Summer break is an ideal time to develop mindfulness or meditation practice. These practices can help reduce stress, enhance focus, and improve overall well-being. Find a quiet space, sit comfortably, and dedicate a few minutes each day to simply be present and cultivate inner peace. This has been one of my goals from the beginning of the year and I even bought the Superhuman Meditation app, but as the school year went on I wasn’t as consistent with it. This summer I aim to create a habit of incorporating some meditation throughout my day.
Plan a Staycation:
- You don’t have to travel far to have a relaxing vacation. Plan a staycation and explore the attractions and hidden gems in your own city or town. Visit museums, try new restaurants, take leisurely walks, or spend lazy afternoons in local cafes. Discovering the beauty and charm of your own surroundings can be a refreshing experience. I love going to my local coffee shops and sitting down to enjoy a nice latte.
Engage in Physical Activity:
- Take advantage of the warmer weather by engaging in physical activities that you enjoy. Go for a bike ride, take a swim, practice yoga in the park, or join a sports league. Exercise not only benefits your physical health but also releases endorphins that boost mood and reduce stress. I absolutely love being outside and I recently tried mountain biking. I will be taking advantage of having the weekdays off and riding on a trail. Avoiding the weekend so I can practice riding without as many people around will be such a plus!
Learn Something New:
- Use your summer break as an opportunity to learn a new skill or explore a hobby that you’ve always been interested in. Sign up for a cooking class, learn to play a musical instrument, take up gardening, or enroll in an online course. Nurturing your curiosity and expanding your knowledge can be both relaxing and fulfilling.
Disconnect from Technology:
- In today’s digital age, it’s crucial to take breaks from technology and give your mind a chance to unwind. Designate certain times of the day as “technology-free zones” and use that time to engage in offline activities such as journaling, practicing mindfulness, taking walks, or enjoying quality time with loved ones. I know I can get caught up on social media and emails, so prioritizing times without technology will give me a nice little reset.
Reconnect with Loved Ones:
- Summer break provides an excellent opportunity to reconnect with family and friends. Plan gatherings, organize barbecues, or simply spend quality time with loved ones. Social connections and meaningful relationships are essential for rejuvenation and happiness. My sister’s wedding is coming up and I am looking forward to taking a week to spend time celebrating with all of my family!
Prioritize Self-Care:
- Above all, prioritize self-care during the summer break. Focus on activities that make you feel good and help you relax. Take long baths, practice self-reflection, treat yourself to a spa day, get plenty of sleep, and nourish your body with healthy meals.
