Are you ready to embark on an exciting journey with your little preschoolers this school year? I’ve got the perfect idea to kick off the first theme: Camping! I promise you, this preschool camping theme will be a “wild” adventure filled with joy, learning, and memories that will last a lifetime.
Let’s start by transforming our classroom into a camping wonderland. We used this preschool camping theme during our summer camp, and it turned out amazing! Plus, since my classroom was already set up as a campground, there wasn’t much more I needed to do for the start of school! Imagine stepping into a whole new world where the students can explore the great outdoors right inside the school walls. It’s going to be epic!

On the last day of our summer camp, we went on a field trip to a local park and set up a real tent for our students! They absolutely loved being able to go inside and lay in the sleeping bag. We also had a picnic set up and some outdoor games. It was a true camping experience!
Welcome to the Fishing Pond!
To begin our camping extravaganza, we put in a fishing pond set up right in the middle of the classroom. Don’t worry, there won’t be any real water involved, but we had pretend fishing rods and colorful fish for the kids to catch. It’s an excellent way to enhance their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills while having a blast. I used the Melissa & Doug Let’s Explore Fishing Play Set and the kids loved trying to catch their fish! This set is fantastic because it incorporates fish of different sizes and the kids were able to measure and compare which fish was “smaller” or “bigger”.
Let’s Go Camping!
We turned a corner of the classroom into a cozy campground. We had a pretend campfire, picnic basket, and even a little tent. I used the Melissa & Doug Let’s Explore Campfire S’mores Play Set to add a cute campfire where they could roast marshmallows and make their own s’mores. This set was so fun because you can turn the marshmallows inside out and they turned into a toasted marshmallow! The kids loved engaging in imaginative play, telling campfire stories, and pretending to cook marshmallows. This is also an excellent opportunity to introduce fire safety in a fun and engaging way.
Building Station – Nature’s Creations!
Time to tap into those engineering skills! l set up a building station with various materials like sticks, pinecones, and log pieces. The children can construct their own little cabins, bridges, or even forts. Seeing their creativity shine through as they work together and problem-solve is incredible.
Camping Essentials Exploration
Let’s talk about camping essentials! We set up a mini-camp store where the kids can “shop” for camping gear like lanterns, binoculars, s’mores ingredients, and more. It’s not only fun but also a great way to introduce basic math concepts through pretend play as they count and exchange “camping dollars.”
Journey into the Insect Sensory Bin
Nature is full of fascinating critters, and we got to explore the world of insects. A sensory bin filled with pinecones, green beads for grass, and toy insects was a hit! The kids can use magnifying glasses to examine the bugs up close and learn about their characteristics.
Let’s Write About Camping!
We set up a writing center using stamps, markers, scissors, and glue sticks. The kids could draw and write about their camping adventures, whether real or imagined. My kids really enjoyed practicing cutting the paper and then gluing the pieces onto another sheet. One student even made a gift card for their mom! It wasn’t exactly camping-related, but the creativity that came out was priceless! This is an excellent opportunity to encourage language development and creativity in expressing their thoughts.
When school starts, and I use this as my first theme, I will also incorporate lessons about forest animals and their habitats. Reading books about woodland creatures and engaging in animal-themed crafts will make the learning experience even more enriching!
I can already feel the excitement building up for August and September! Our preschoolers are going to have a fantastic time exploring the camping theme, and I can’t wait to see their faces light up with joy and curiosity. Let’s make this first theme one to remember and set the tone for a fabulous school year ahead!
Happy camping and teaching!
